Compress PDF

Make a PDF small enough for email or an online form. Pictures inside are compressed; text and fonts stay as they were. Everything happens on your device.

Automatic keeps text selectable and handles scanned documents as images.

    How to compress a PDF

    1. Drop one or more PDF files into the box, or tap choose files.
    2. Leave Automatic mode and choose the compression level. Need a hard limit, for example for a government portal? Tick Fit into a size and enter it in MB.
    3. Press Compress PDF, check the new size and Download.

    Two ways to compress

Keep text compresses only the pictures inside the document: photos, logos, embedded scans. Text, fonts, links and tables are not touched, so the text can still be selected, copied and searched. This is the right choice for reports, presentations and documents created on a computer.

Like scans turns every page into a compressed image. It gives the strongest result for scanned documents and photos of paper, but the text becomes part of the picture. Automatic chooses for you: if the PDF has no text layer, it treats it as a scan.

    Which level to choose

Strong (96 dpi) is for email and portals with strict limits. Medium (144 dpi) is a good balance for reading on screen. Light (200 dpi) keeps detail for printing.

If a document contains almost no pictures, there’s little to compress: such PDFs are usually small already. In that case you get the original back instead of a bigger copy.

    Frequently asked questions

How do I compress a PDF to 1 MB or 2 MB?
Tick Fit into a size, enter the limit and press the button. The tool tries the levels one by one and stops at the best quality that fits.
    Will the text become blurry?
Not in Keep text mode: only pictures are compressed. In Like scans mode text becomes part of the image, so choose Medium or Light if you need it crisp.
Why did my file hardly get smaller?
It probably consists of text without large pictures. Text takes very little space, so there’s nothing heavy to compress.
Is it safe for personal documents?
Yes. The file is processed in your browser and never sent anywhere. You can even switch off the internet before compressing.
